President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved the dissolution of the Governing Council of Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, (UNIZIK) and the removal of the newly appointed Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Bernard Ifeanyi Odoh, along with the Registrar, Mrs. Rosemary Ifeoma Nwokike.
A statement issued by the special adviser to be the president on information and strategy, Bayo Onanuga, said the move comes amid allegations of procedural violations in the appointment of the Vice-Chancellor.
The universityโs Governing Council, led by Ambassador Greg Ozumba Mbadiwe and including five other membersโHafiz Oladejo, Augustine Onyedebelu, Engr. Amioleran Osahon, and Rtd. Gen. Funsho Oyeneyinโwas accused of bypassing due process to appoint an unqualified candidate, prompting federal intervention.

โThe council, led by Ambassador Greg Ozumba Mbadiwe, included five other members: Hafiz Oladejo, Augustine Onyedebelu, and Engr. Amioleran Osahon, and Rtd. Gen. Funsho Oyeneyin.
โThe sacking of the governing council and officials followed reports that the council illegally appointed an unqualified vice-chancellor without following due process.
โAfter the controversial appointment, the Federal Government stepped in to address tensions between the universityโs Senate and the governing council of the 33-year-old institution.
โThe government expressed concern over the councilโs apparent disregard for the universityโs governing laws in its selection processโ, the statement said.
In a related development, President Tinubu also approved the removal of Engr. Ohieku Muhammed Salami as Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of the Governing Council of the Federal University of Health Sciences, Otukpo, Benue State.
Salami was accused of unlawfully suspending the universityโs Vice-Chancellor without following prescribed procedures.
According to the statement, despite directives from the Federal Ministry of Education to reverse the suspension, Salami allegedly refused to comply, instead resorting to abusive and threatening conduct towards ministry officials, including the Permanent Secretary.
President Tinubu warned against unnecessary disruptions in the countryโs universities, reaffirming his administrationโs commitment to raising education standards nationwide.
โIn the same vein, President Tinubu also approved the removal of Engr. Ohieku Muhammed Salami as the Pro-chancellor and Chairman of the governing council of the Federal University of Health Sciences in Otukpo, Benue State.
โThe decision followed Salamiโs illegal actions, including suspending the Vice-Chancellor without following the prescribed procedures.
โDespite the Federal Ministry of Educationโs call for the unlawful suspension to be revoked, Engr. Salami refused to comply. Instead, he resorted to abusive and threatening behaviour towards the Ministryโs Directors, including the Permanent Secretary.
โThe Federal Government reiterated that the primary responsibility of university councils is to ensure the smooth operation of university activities in accordance with the act establishing each university.
โPresident Tinubu warned the councils not to create distractions in their universities as his government is focused on improving the countryโs education standardsโ, the statement said.
