GISTSMATE MEDIA reports that the Niger State Police Command said one officer killed himself amid an investigation into missing ammunition.
The officer, Isah Abdullahi, a deputy superintendent of police, was attached to the 12 Police Mobile Force (PMF) unit in Minna, the state capital.
Wasiu Abiodun, the command’s spokesperson, in a statement on Friday, said Mr Isah was arrested on 15 December for “suspected involvement in illegal dealings of ammunition.”
A day after his arrest, Mr Abiodun said the deceased was taken to his office for a routine arms audit, but killed himself in the process.
“Unfortunately, while the audit process was ongoing, the officer picked up a pistol within the office, shot himself in the head and died on the spot,” said Mr Abiodun.
The police spokesperson said police officers deployed to accompany the audit team were arrested for negligence in the line of duty.
Mr Abiodun noted that the police will conduct further investigation into the matter.
