Nigeria and the United Kingdom signed a major new migration partnership on Thursday, March 19, 2026, designed to fast-track the deportation of failed asylum seekers and foreign criminals.
The agreement was formalized during President Bola Tinubu’s historic state visit to the UK—the first by a West African leader in 37 years.
The Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed by Nigeria’s Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, and UK Home Secretary, Shabana Mahmood.
The deal specifically targets individuals with no legal right to remain in the UK, including thousands of failed asylum seekers and foreign national offenders.
For the first time, Nigeria will recognise UK letters as valid identification for returns, eliminating the need to wait for emergency travel documents and significantly cutting bureaucratic delays.
The partnership is structured to “massively scale up” deportation numbers and speed up the removal of those who have overstayed or committed crimes.
This new deal follows the UK’s abandonment of its controversial Rwanda asylum scheme and aims to create a more direct, bilateral system for migration enforcement.
Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer hailed the visit and the agreement as a vital step in deepening long-term cooperation on security and transnational crime.
Other recent developments in this partnership (as of early 2026) include:
Financial Incentives:
In the partnership, there’s a pilot scheme offering families of failed asylum seekers up to £40,000 to leave the UK voluntarily.
Ongoing commitments to tackle human trafficking and illicit financial flows between the two nations.
