As political realignments ahead of the 2027 general elections gather momentum, Kano State Governor, Alhaji Abba Kabir Yusuf, is reportedly on the verge of defecting from the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
Sources revealed that the governor has concluded consultations with some of his closest political allies and is expected to formally announce his decision in January, 2026.
However, the move has reportedly failed to secure the backing of the leader of the Kwankwasiyya movement and former Kano State governor, Senator Rabi’u Musa Kwankwaso, who has openly rejected the plan and insisted he will remain in the NNPP.
Despite repeated attempts, the governor reportedly failed to secure Kwankwaso’s endorsement for the move.
Sources cited in the report revealed that the anticipated support of some members of the Kano State House of Assembly, along with other influential party leaders, could help stabilize the political process should Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf formally exit the NNPP.
A lawmaker in the Kano State House of Assembly, who spoke on condition of anonymity to POLITICS DIGEST, revealed that Governor Yusuf has already briefed some legislators on his plans.
“The governor has met with some members of the House and informed them of his intention. The Speaker is expected to issue a statement assuring him of full support, irrespective of whatever political decision he takes in the interest of the state,” the source said.
The lawmaker further disclosed that loyalists of Senator Kwankwaso are also preparing to issue a counter-statement reaffirming their allegiance to the former presidential candidate and the NNPP.
“Within the next week, these developments will become clearer. The governor appears to have made up his mind, despite Kwankwaso’s resistance,” the source added.
It would be recalled that speculations had earlier surfaced suggesting that both Kwankwaso and Governor Yusuf were planning to defect to the APC. Kwankwaso, however, publicly dismissed the claims.
His recent strong criticisms of the APC have further reinforced the belief among political observers that he has no intention of joining the ruling party.
If confirmed, the defection would mark a major political shift in Kano State and could have wider implications for party alignments ahead of future elections.
