Iranians have been gathering to form human chains and act as human shields around power plants, bridges, and critical infrastructure across the country.
These gatherings come in direct response to U.S. President Donald Trump’s ultimatum threatening to destroy these facilities if Tehran does not reopen the Strait of Hormuz to shipping by 8 p.m. Eastern Time (midnight GMT).
State-run media reported that thousands, and potentially millions of Iranians, have gathered at locations such as the Bushehr nuclear plant, the Tabriz power station, and bridges in cities like Ahwaz, forming chains of human shields to protect infrastructure.
President Trump warned on social media and in interviews that “a whole civilization will die tonight” if Iran does not meet his deadline.
He described his plan for Tuesday night as “Power Plant Day, and Bridge Day, all wrapped up in one,” threatening to “decimate” Iran’s infrastructure, including oil wells on Kharg Island.
Even before the ultimatum expired, U.S. and Israeli strikes were reported on Iranian railways and bridges, with reports of civilian deaths in some provinces.
Despite the severe threats, Iranian leaders have mocked the ultimatum. President Masoud Pezeshkian claimed that “more than 14 million proud Iranians” have registered to defend the country, vowing to sacrifice his own life to protect it.
The situation has left residents on edge, with many fearfully anticipating the potential for mass power, water, and gas outages.
