President Bola Tinubu has criticised Kayode Egbetokun, inspector-general of police, over the “failure” of officers to apprehend perpetrators of the recent deadly attacks in Benue state
Speaking at a stakeholders meeting in Makurdi on Wednesday, Tinubu said he expected the police to have made some arrests after the attack in Yelwata, a community in Guma LGA of Benue state, which led to the killing of over 100 people.
“Police, I hope your men are on alert to listen to information. How come no arrest has been made? I expect there should be an arrest of those criminals,” Tinubu said.
The meeting is part of a broader effort to find a lasting solution to the crisis that has affected parts of the state, especially rural communities.
Attendees at the stakeholders meeting are key national and state-level figures, including the state governor, Hyacinth Alia; governors from across the country, particularly from the North-Central states; the National Security Adviser (NSA), Nuhu Ribadu, Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), George Akume.
The service chiefs, key members of the National Assembly, leaders of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), and other prominent individuals, especially those representing affected communities in Benue are also present.
Other high-profile attendees include the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), members of the APC National Working Committee (NWC), and key members of the National Assembly, especially those representing affected communities in Benue.
Suspected armed herders had on Friday attacked the Yelwata community, leading to the death of at least 59 residents and the displacement of over 3,000 others.
