Cross River State House of Assembly has suspended one of its members, Ovat Dickson Agbor, over allegations of domestic violence involving his wife.
Agbor, who represents the Obubra I State Constituency, was suspended following deliberations by the Assembly after the issue was brought before the lawmakers during plenary.
The decision of the House reportedly followed a petition and public concerns over an alleged incident in which the lawmaker was accused of physically assaulting his spouse.
The development sparked reactions from civil society groups and members of the public who called for the legislature to take disciplinary action.
During plenary, members of the Assembly condemned all forms of domestic violence and stressed that public office holders must be held to high moral and ethical standards.
The Assembly subsequently resolved to suspend the lawmaker pending further investigation into the allegations. The suspension, according to the House, is intended to allow for a thorough review of the matter while preserving the integrity of the legislature.
Lawmakers emphasised that the decision was not a final judgment but a disciplinary step aimed at ensuring accountability and upholding the dignity of the legislative institution.
Domestic violence advocates have welcomed the move, noting that it sends a strong signal that allegations of abuse, particularly involving public officials, must be treated with seriousness.
The leadership of the Assembly stated that further actions would depend on the outcome of investigations and any additional findings relating to the case.
