Abayomi Fasina, a professor of pedology and the vice chancellor of the Federal University Oye-Ekiti (FUOYE) who was voice-recorded sexually harassing a subordinate, has been asked to proceed on leave.
The leave approval was granted by the Governing Council chaired by Victor Ndoma-Egba on Monday, although insiders told FIJ it was a hurried move and should have been a suspension.
“The Governing Council of the Federal University Oye-Ekiti (FUOYE) at its 7th Emergency Meeting held online on Monday 14th April, 2025, considered the request of the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Abayomi Sunday Fasina, to proceed on his accumulated Annual and Research Leave and approved six (6) months, being 126 working days out of his total entitlements of 228 days with effect from today, Monday, 14th April, 2025,” Ibrahim Mufutau, the university registrar, wrote in a press statement.
The council’s statement.
“In addition, the Governing Council appointed Prof. Olubunmi S. Shittu, the incumbent Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Academics, who is also the most senior of the three (3) Deputy Vice-Chancellors, as the Acting Vice-Chancellor of the University for a period of six (6) months with effect from today, Monday, 14th April, 2025.”
The timing of the leave approval has been called into question for the fact he is still being “seriously” investigated by the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) over his sexual misconduct.
On Thursday, when contacted for an update about its investigation on Thursday, Demola Bakare, the director of public enlightenment and education for the ICPC, said the agency was “seriously” investigating the matter.
“We are on it. We are seriously on it,” Bakare said on the phone. “I met with the team handling the case even yesterday.”
A staff of the university, whose identity is protected, told FIJ on Monday that the management arrived at the decision overnight, questioning the hastiness and sincerity of the council.
“They reached the decision overnight. That was the reason why the meeting was held online. It was supposed to be a suspension but they decided to still give him pat on the back as they have been doing,” the source said.
“Why is it that he going on leave at a time an independent investigation is being done over his sexual misconduct?”
FIJ had previously reported that the council, rather than sanction Fasina, resolved that Fasina did not sexually harass Folasade Adebayo, the acting director of services at the school, despite irrefutable evidence to that effect.
The council mandated the woman to a written apology in seven days for bringing the name of the university to “disrepute ” and recording Fasina’s sexual remarks without his consent.
