The National Orientation Agency (NOA) has announced plans to clamp down on what it described as extreme and indecent “sign-out” practices among graduating students in Nigerian tertiary institutions.
Director-General of the Agency, Lanre Issa-Onilu, disclosed this during the flag-off of a nationwide campaign on government policies, programmes, and activities. He was represented by Deputy Director-General Anita Ukamaka.
Issa-Onilu lamented the growing trend of students defacing their white shirts with markers during sign-out ceremonies, adding that some female students go as far as exposing their bodies, including their chests, for signatures.
He described the practice as morally wrong and contrary to Nigeria’s cherished cultural values.
“In the next couple of weeks, the Agency will be physically engaging the public in the 36 states, the Federal Capital Territory, and all 774 local government areas. We will also be visiting higher institutions for advocacy,” he said.
According to him, the “boots-on-the-ground” approach will give Nigerians the opportunity to interact directly with government officials, seek clarifications, and get feedback on policies and programmes.
The sensitisation campaign will also focus on proper waste disposal and the maintenance of drainage systems to curb flooding. Issa-Onilu cited recent flood disasters in Niger, Kogi, Rivers, Anambra, and Bayelsa States, noting that each incident leaves damaging effects on the economy.
“Poor drainage systems and indiscriminate dumping of waste have contributed to recurring floods across states. NiMet issues early warning advisories with about 90 percent accuracy, and we urge the public to take these seriously. It is also important to note that the Presidential Flood Mitigation directive provided N3 billion per state in 2024 for drainage clearance and relocation efforts,” he stated.
The DG reiterated that the Agency’s third-quarter nationwide sensitisation exercise would deepen public understanding of government initiatives while discouraging harmful practices among young people.
