A group of military personnel in Benin on Sunday announced that they had ousted President Patrice Talon, who is due to step down next April after 10 years in power.
Soldiers calling themselves the “Military Committee for Refoundation” (CMR), said on state television that they had met and decided that “Mr Patrice Talon is removed from office as president of the republic”.
Talon’s whereabouts were unknown and the French Embassy said on X that “gunfire was reported at Camp Guezo” near the president’s official residence. It urged French citizens to remain indoors for security.
Benin Republic coup is coming barely two weeks after military took over at Guinea Bissau.
GISTSMATE MEDIA reported that gunfire erupted in Bissau on Wednesday 26 of November as Guinea-Bissau’s President, Umaro Embaló, said he was arrested around 1 p.m. inside his office at the presidential palace, describing the incident as an unfolding coup d’état, according to The Africa Report.
Embaló, who contested last presidential election and claims, by his own tally, to have secured 65 per cent of the vote, told Jeune Afrique that his detention was carried out without the use of force.
He accused the Army Chief of Staff of leading the operation against him.
Also detained were the armed forces Chief of Staff, General Biaguê Na Ntan; the deputy Chief of Staff, General Mamadou Touré; and the interior minister, Botché Candé, heightening fears of a major rupture between the presidency and the military hierarchy.
ECOWAS and African Union condemned the coup and placed sanctions on the country.
