Barely a week after a historic ceasefire deal brokered by U.S. President Donald Trump, tensions in the Middle East have flared once again as Israel launched a new wave of air strikes in the southern Gaza Strip, accusing Hamas of violating the truce.
According to the Israel Defense Forces (IDF), the strikes targeted “terror positions” linked to Hamas following what it described as a “blatant violation” of the ceasefire agreement signed in Sharm el-Sheikh, Egypt earlier this month.
A senior Israeli security official confirmed that the government has also suspended all aid deliveries into Gaza until further notice, citing the alleged breach. The decision halts hundreds of lorries carrying food, water, and medical supplies that had been entering the territory daily since the truce began on October 10.
However, Hamas has denied violating the agreement, saying it has lost contact with fighters allegedly involved in clashes near Rafah. The militant group maintains it remains committed to the ceasefire deal.
Local sources in Gaza reported that an Israeli air strike in al-Zawaida, a coastal town between Deir al-Balah and Khan Younis, killed six members of Hamas’s al-Qassam Brigades, including Yahya al-Mabhouh, a top commander in the Jabalia Battalion. The strike hit a small seaside café, marking one of Hamas’s most significant losses since the ceasefire took effect.
Images shared by BBC showed plumes of smoke rising over eastern Khan Younis, adding to growing fears that the fragile peace could be collapsing.
In Washington, President Trump’s negotiating team led by Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner revealed earlier this week that Israeli air strikes on Qatar during last month’s peace talks were a key reason Trump pushed to end the war. “He felt the Israelis were getting a little bit out of control in what they were doing,” Witkoff told CBS.
On the ground in Gaza, residents say the renewed bombardment has reignited the fear and uncertainty that briefly lifted after the ceasefire. Prices of essential goods have begun to rise again, reflecting public anxiety and disappointment over how quickly hostilities resumed.
As both sides trade blame for the truce’s collapse, analysts warn that the ceasefire is now hanging by a thread, with the situation threatening to spiral back into full-scale conflict.
