Carlo Ancelotti will officially leave Real Madrid following the club’s final La Liga fixture of the 2024-25 season to become the head coach of Brazil’s national team, according to The Athletic.
The veteran Italian manager has signed a contract with the Brazilian Football Confederation (CBF) and will assume his new role on May 26, just a day after Madrid’s last league match.
This appointment makes Ancelotti the first-ever non-Brazilian to manage the Seleção permanently.
Ancelotti, 65, will succeed Dorival Junior, who was sacked in March after Brazil suffered a heavy 4-1 defeat to arch-rivals Argentina in a World Cup qualifier. His departure marks the end of a successful stint at the Santiago Bernabéu, where he added to an already legendary coaching career.
Meanwhile, Real Madrid is expected to replace Ancelotti with former club midfielder and current Bayer Leverkusen boss Xabi Alonso.
The Spaniard has confirmed he will leave Leverkusen at the season’s close and is reportedly the top choice to take over at the Bernabéu ahead of June’s FIFA Club World Cup.
Ancelotti’s remaining fixtures with Madrid are against Mallorca (May 14), Sevilla (May 18) and Real Sociedad (May 25). He’ll be aiming to finish his tenure on a winning note.
