BREAKING: ADC, NNPP Reject Electoral Act 2026, Seek Fresh Amendment By NASS

The African Democratic Congress (ADC) and the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) officially rejected the newly signed Electoral Act 2026, demanding that the National Assembly (NASS) immediately commence a fresh amendment process.

The opposition parties, represented by NNPP National Chairman Ajuji Ahmed, held a joint press conference in Abuja attended by other prominent figures including Atiku Abubakar, Peter Obi, and Rotimi Amaechi.

They described the law as a “threat to democracy” and a calculated attempt by the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) to establish a one-party state.

The opposition’s core grievances center on several “obnoxious” provisions they believe undermine electoral integrity.

They criticized the failure to mandate real-time electronic transmission of results from polling units to the INEC Result Viewing Portal (IReV), arguing that retaining manual transmission as a fallback creates room for manipulation.

The parties rejected amendments that limit political parties to only direct primaries and consensus for candidate selection. They called this an unconstitutional “encroachment” on party autonomy and an attempt to destabilize the opposition before the 2027 elections.

The ADC previously raised concerns about moving the 2027 general elections to November 2026, arguing it would push Nigeria into “permanent electioneering” and distract from governance.

Leaders expressed shock at the “contemptuous haste” with which President Bola Tinubu signed the bill into law on February 18, 2026, shortly after its passage by NASS.

The opposition coalition stated they will deploy all constitutional avenues to block the implementation of the Act.

They are specifically demanding that NASS: Remove objectionable clauses that weaken transparency.

Reinstate mandatory e-transmission of results to build public confidence.

Respect party autonomy regarding the method of selecting candidates.

The African Democratic Congress (ADC) and New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) have warned that failure to review the law could lead to a significant political crisis ahead of the 2027 general elections.
