Ahead of the 2027 polls, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has zoned the partyβs presidential slot to the southern part of the country.
The decision was taken at the party 102nd National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting held in Abuja.
The party also insisted that the chairmanship position would be retained by a northerner, hence confirmed Ambassador Umar Iliya Damagum as its substantive National.
This brings and ending to over a year of Damagunβs tenure as the acting national chairman of the party.
This development puts Damagum in the position as the partyβs leader heading into its National Elective Convention, scheduled for November 15β16 in Ibadan, Oyo State.
Damagum, who was the PDPβs Deputy National Chairman (North), stepped into the role of Acting National Chairman in March 2023 after the suspension of Iyorchia Ayu, the former chairman, following internal party crises and legal disputes post-2023 general elections.
On Monday, the partyβs National Legal Adviser, Kamaldeen Ajibade, administered the oath of office, thus sealing his transition from acting to substantive leadership status.
The zoning of PDP’s Presidential ticket to south gives chance to Oyo state Governor, Seyi Makinde and Peter Obi, the former Anambra Governor who may come back to the party to clinch the ticket.
