At Least Seven Dead, 800,000 Without Power As Winter Storm Hits US

At least seven people have died, and more than 800,000 households lost power as a winter storm spread across large parts of the United States.

Schools and roads were closed, and flights were cancelled as “life-threatening” conditions extended from Texas to New England, according to the National Weather Service (NWS).

Authorities confirmed that at least two people died of hypothermia in Louisiana, while other storm-related deaths were reported in Texas, Tennessee and Kansas.

By Sunday afternoon, power supply to over 800,000 households had been disrupted, and more than 11,000 flights had been cancelled.

Heavy snow, sleet and freezing rain were forecast to persist for days, with the storm expected to affect about 180 million people across the country.

“The snow and the ice will be very, very slow to melt and won’t be going away anytime soon, and that’s going to hinder any recovery efforts,” Allison Santorelli, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service, said.

Louisiana’s Department of Health confirmed that two men died from hypothermia, while the mayor of Austin, Texas, reported an “exposure-related” death.

In Kansas, officials said a woman found covered in snow “may have succumbed to hypothermia,” while three weather-related deaths were also recorded in Tennessee.

New York City Mayor, Zohran Mamdani, said at least five people died in the city on Saturday, though the causes were still being determined, adding that “It is a reminder that every year New Yorkers succumb to the cold”.

New York Governor, Kathy Hochul, urged residents to remain indoors and avoid travel, describing the conditions as the coldest the state had seen in years.

“This is certainly the coldest weather we’ve seen, the coldest winter storm we’ve seen in years,” Hochul said.

Emergency declarations were issued in nearly half of US states as authorities warned that ice buildup could damage infrastructure and make roads unsafe.
