The Nigerian media industry has been thrown into mourning following the tragic death of Somtochukwu Christelle Maduagwu, a news anchor, reporter, and producer with ARISE News Channel, who was killed during an armed robbery at her residence in the Katampe area of Abuja.
Maduagwu, fondly called “Sommie” by colleagues, was attacked in the early hours of Monday. She was 29 years old.
Confirming the development in a statement, ARISE News described her as “a cherished member of the ARISE News family” whose voice “engaged and connected with our viewers.”
The statement added: “Sommie’s voice is now silent but her spirit, passion and legacy will endure as part of our collective memory. We call for a speedy investigation, apprehension and prosecution of the culprits.”
The Nigeria Police have since launched an investigation into the incident.
Maduagwu, who was born on December 26, 1995, was a trained lawyer before pursuing a career in broadcast journalism. She quickly became a respected and vibrant presence on Nigerian television, admired for her warm on-screen personality and professionalism.
Her colleagues and management have extended condolences to her family, describing her passing as a devastating loss not only to ARISE News but to the broader Nigerian media community.
