Barely 24 hours after an attack on a church in Eruku, Ekiti Local Government Area, another incident has occurred in Bokungi Village, Edu Local Government Area of Kwara State.
Armed men, on Wednesday, evening attacked rice farmers working on their fields, killing two and abducting four others.
The incident happened during peak harvest hours, with victims reportedly surrounded while gathering their rice. A community source confirmed the development, noting that information was still being compiled.
Residents said the attackers operated for several minutes before leaving the area.
Further findings indicated that the two farmers were killed during an attempt to resist the abduction. According to a community leader in Bokungi, the farmers were wrapping up their day’s work around 6 p.m. when the assailants approached.
Four farmers who were close by were taken away, while three others ran. Two were fatally shot, and one escaped with injury. The deceased have since been buried.
Community members say rising insecurity in Edu Local Government Area has forced many farmers to abandon their settlements, particularly during the harvest season when they are most exposed.
