AFCON 2025: Osimhen Threatens To Quit Super Eagles After Mozambique Game

Super Eagles forward, Victor Osimhen, caused major tension in the Nigerian camp on Monday after openly threatening to walk away from the national team following Nigeria’s emphatic win over Mozambique at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations.

The striker was said to be visibly angry after an on-field disagreement during the match. The situation unfolded despite Nigeria securing a comfortable victory and Osimhen playing a key role in the result.

Reports from the stadium indicate that the forward had an exchange with Ademola Lookman during the second half.

The issue arose after a moment when Osimhen felt he should have received a pass inside the box. His reaction was immediate and emotional.

Although Osimhen had already scored twice in the game, his frustration did not ease. Moments later, he turned towards the bench and gestured repeatedly, signaling his desire to be substituted.

He was eventually withdrawn and replaced by Moses Simon.

What followed after the final whistle raised more concern within the team setup. Osimhen reportedly left the pitch area angrily and dropped his accreditation card. He was heard insisting he was “done” with the Super Eagles and wanted to return to Turkey.

Officials of the Nigeria Football Federation quickly stepped in to prevent the situation from escalating.

Senior members of the delegation were said to have held talks with the striker behind closed doors. He was later calmed and escorted away from the scene.

Osimhen’s reaction has sparked discussions around discipline and pressure within the national team camp.

The forward remains one of Nigeria’s most important players, and any hint of his exit could affect the team’s AFCON ambitions.

As of Tuesday morning, there was no official statement from the NFF or the player regarding the incident.

Team sources, however, suggest efforts are ongoing to restore calm and unity ahead of Nigeria’s next fixture.
