Crystal Palace and England centre-back Marc Guéhi may face disciplinary action from the English Football Association (FA) after modifying his rainbow-coloured captain’s armband to read “I love Jesus” during Saturday’s 1-1 draw against Newcastle United.
The rainbow armbands, which feature the branding of Stonewall’s Rainbow Laces campaign in support of the LGBTQ+ community, were distributed to all 20 Premier League clubs ahead of last weekend’s matches. However, Guéhi’s decision to add a personal, religious message to the armband may be deemed a breach of the Laws of the Game.
According to Law 4, “initiative slogans/emblems promoting the game of football, respect and integrity” are permitted, but “political, religious or personal slogans, statements or images” are strictly forbidden. The law also states that “for any offence the player and/or the team will be sanctioned by the competition organiser, national football association or by FIFA.”
Furthermore, Football Association kit rules explicitly prohibit “any political or religious message” on clothing, warning that “disciplinary action may be taken” for any breach of these regulations.
Guéhi’s actions may be seen as an aggravating factor, given that he chose to add a religious slogan to an armband specifically designed to support LGBTQ+ issues.
In contrast, Ipswich Town captain Sam Morsy, a practising Muslim, opted not to wear the rainbow armband, instead wearing the standard black version. Ipswich Town Football Club released a statement respecting Morsy’s decision, while reaffirming the club’s commitment to inclusivity.
The English Football Association has yet to comment on the matter, but Guéhi may face disciplinary action for his actions.
