Nigeria Not Ready For GMOs, Says Southern Nigeria Youth Congress President

The President of the Southern Nigeria Youth Congress, Comr. Emordi Ugochukwu Caleb, has expressed concerns over Nigeria’s preparedness to adopt genetically modified organisms (GMOs).

Speaking at the public investigation hearing on GMO adoption in Nigeria, he commended the National Assembly for initiating the critical discussion but urged caution in proceeding with GMO implementation.

In his statement, Comr. Emordi highlighted the lack of conclusive evidence on the safety and sustainability of GMOs as a significant concern.

“While proponents of GMO implementation presented unsubstantiated facts, those opposed provided real-life examples highlighting potential dangers,” he said, emphasizing the need for evidence-based decisions.

He called on lawmakers to consider the long-term implications of GMO adoption, particularly its impact on public health and agriculture.

“The National Assembly should exercise caution and consider how other countries navigate the challenges associated with GMOs,” Comr. Emordi advised.

In addition, Comr. Emordi advocated for increased investment in local scientific research to address the gaps in knowledge surrounding GMO foods.

“I call for improved funding for our laboratories and scientists to enable us to carry out proper research and generate relevant data that will drive the agricultural sector,” he said.
