Hon. Lukman Adeleye, Minority Leader of the Ogun State House of Assembly, was reportedly abducted by unidentified gunmen on Saturday while casting his vote at Ward 15, Ibefun, in Odogbolu Local Government Area, Ogun State.
The assailants, suspected to be military personnel, allegedly whisked Adeleye away to the Ilese barracks.
According to a source who spoke on condition of anonymity, preliminary investigations suggest the arrest might have been orchestrated by a powerful individual.
The Director-General of Adeleye’s campaign organisation, Hon. Olujimi Oloja, confirmed that the lawmaker is in the custody of military personnel.
He criticised the alleged military interference in the local government election, describing it as an assault on democratic principles.
“Despite efforts to secure his release, officers at the barracks insist he would remain detained until the conclusion of the electoral process,” Oloja said.
He assured the public of Adeleye’s safety and stated that steps were being taken to ensure his prompt release.
Oloja condemned the use of intimidation and force in an election process, stressing that such actions violate fundamental rights.
He added that Adeleye, known for his dedication to community development and education, will address the public upon his release.
Adeleye, a staunch advocate for education, has held various positions within his party, including Local Government Organising Secretary for the PDP.
