Let me say something that might surprise you: conflict is not the enemy of a healthy relationship; contempt is.
Every relationship experiences conflict. Two people with different histories, different needs, different temperaments, and different ways of seeing the world will inevitably disagree. That is not a problem; that is reality. The question is not whether you will fight; it is whether you will fight well.
Relationship researcher Dr John Gottman spent decades studying couples and found that it is not the presence of conflict that predicts whether a relationship will fail. It is how couples handle conflict.
Specifically, he identified four behaviours that are so damaging to relationships that he called them โThe Four Horsemenโ: criticism, contempt, defensiveness, and stonewalling. Of these four, contempt โ treating your partner with disrespect, mockery, or disdain โ is the single greatest predictor of relationship breakdown.
Fighting well means fighting about the issue without attacking the person. It means staying in the room even when the room is uncomfortable. It means listening to understand rather than to win. It means being willing to be wrong and saying so. It means returning to each other after the difficult conversation, rather than treating the argument as evidence that the relationship is broken.
A couple that fights well is not a couple that never fights; it is a couple that has developed the capacity to stay connected even in disagreement. That capacity is not magic; it is a skill, and like all skills, it can be learned, practised, and improved.

1. Attack the problem, not the person
There is always a difference between โyou are so irresponsibleโ and โI am worried about how we are managing our finances.โ The first is a character attack. The second is a conversation about a problem. One produces defensiveness and hurt; the other produces collaboration.
2. Stay in the room
The temptation to walk away, go silent, or shut down is powerful in conflict. Resist it where you can. If you need a break, name it and commit to returning: โI need thirty minutes. I am coming back to this.โ Walking away without that commitment communicates abandonment.
3. Repair quickly
The longer you allow distance and resentment to sit after a conflict, the harder it becomes to return to each other. Repair does not mean pretending the argument did not happen. It means making a deliberate move toward reconnection โ a touch, a word, or an acknowledgement.
4. Know your triggers
Most couples have predictable triggers โ specific topics or behaviours that reliably escalate an argument. When you know your triggers, you can prepare for them, name them in the moment, and choose a different response. Triggers are not excuses; they are information.
5. Apologise specifically
Not โI am sorry you feel that way.โ Not โI am sorry butโฆโ A genuine apology names what happened, acknowledges its impact, and does not include a defence. โI am sorry I raised my voice. I know that shuts you down and I do not want to do that to you.โ That is an apology.
Conflict is not the enemy of a healthy relationship; contempt is. Learn to fight well. It is one of the most loving things you can do for the person you are with.
