The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has approved the inclusion of some political parties and candidates in the final lists for the 2027 governorship and State Houses of Assembly elections following complaints over alleged omissions, wrongful nominations and multiple candidacies.
The electoral commission disclosed that it received a total of 130 petitions from political parties challenging aspects of the final lists of candidates published on October 10, 2026.
According to INEC, 66 of the petitions were successful, while 64 were rejected after the commission reviewed the complaints, relevant records and applicable legal provisions.
In a press statement issued on Thursday, October 29, 2026, and signed by Mohammed Kudu Haruna, Chairman of INECโs Information and Voter Education Committee (IVEC), the commission said the complaints followed the publication of the final lists of governorship and State Houses of Assembly candidates.
The complaints bordered on the omission of certain political parties from the published lists, the inclusion of candidates whose names were absent from the membership registers submitted by their political parties, and cases of alleged multiple nominations.
INEC explained that, following its review, it found merit in some of the complaints and consequently approved the inclusion of affected candidates and political parties.
