Super El Nino: All You Need To Know About Extreme Heat The Earth Is Experiencing

Super El Nino is the extreme version of El Nino, officially called  very Strong El Nino or sometimes Behemoth El Nino.

1. What is it?
El Nino happens when trade winds weaken and warm water that should stay in the western Pacific surges eastwards towards South America. Normally sea surface temperature in the central Pacific (Nino 3.4 region) rises 0.5°C – 1°C.

Super El Nino is when it rises by +2°C or more above normal. Some scientists use +2.5°C. It’s rare, about 2.5% chance, happening every 10-15 years.

Only 3 Super El Ninos in modern records:
– 1982/83
– 1997/98 (strongest of 20th century)
– 2015/16

A 6th was recorded in September 2026 according to WMO. Before modern records, there was an 1877/78 Mega Nino that caused famine killing up to 50 million people.

2. Why it happens?
Series of powerful westerly wind bursts push massive warm water pool east. In 2026, scientists said the warm pool is 0.5°C warmer than same time in 1997, which is why ECMWF forecasted near 100% chance of Super El Nino by late 2026.

3. Global Impacts:

It doesn’t just mean heat, it creates flood in one place, drought in another:

– Drought & Fires: Expected in Caribbean, Central America, northern Brazil, central and northern India, central and southern Africa, Indonesia, Philippines, Australia. Crops fail, irrigation canals dry, forest fires increase.

– Flooding & Storms: Heavy flooding in East Africa, southern US, Peru, Ecuador. More hurricanes/cyclones in Pacific, fewer in Atlantic.

– Oceans: Marine heatwaves, coral bleaching, algal blooms, nutrient upwelling stops, fish die off, affecting global seafood supply.

– Food & Health: Crop failure, food shortage, price hike, famine risk. Water disruption, displacement, disease, conflict.

4. What it means for Nigeria / West Africa?
During Super El Nino years, West Africa often sees:
– Late onset of rains / shorter rainy season in north
– More intense but irregular rainfall in south
– Higher temperatures than normal
– Increased risk of drought in Sahel region

5. Will 2026-2027 be a Super El Nino?
Yes — WMO, NOAA and ECMWF all confirm El Nino is already underway in 2026.

Latest median forecast was 2.7°C above average, potentially stronger than 2015/16. That would make 2027 potentially the hottest year on record, because peak impacts are felt the year after development.
