The Nigerian Youth Congress (NYC), Saki East Local Government chapter, has urged young people in the area to take an active part in politics, but to refuse to be used as weapons by politicians. The group also offered to work with the Local Government Council on the challenges facing youths.
Speaking in a statement, the Coordinator, Sam Adeleke, called on youths to rise above the politics of short-term benefits and look to the future. “Politics should not be about what we collect today, but about the future we are building,” he said.
He noted that many graduates in Saki East are still searching for jobs, while students in school need bursaries, however small. “A little support can keep a student in school. These are the real needs our politics should address,” he said.
Mr Adeleke said Saki East has yet to take its true shape politically, and that this will change only when both young and old people change their mindset. He urged young people to drop their lackadaisical attitude towards the future, and appealed to older politicians to play politics in a way that will make them remembered for good.
He said he understands the limits the Local Government Council faces, but believes there are still ways it can step in, especially on youth employment and student welfare. “The Youth Congress under my leadership is ready to work with the Council and share practical ideas that can move Saki East forward,” he said.
With the political season underway, he urged youths to look carefully at the candidates and vote for those who can truly represent the collective interest and bring out the best in Saki East.
