To: The Director General,
National Youth Service Corps (NYSC),
Abuja.
Through: The State Coordinator,
NYSC Oyo State.
Dear Sir/Ma,
URGENT DEMAND FOR IMMEDIATE ACTION, ACCOUNTABILITY AND THE SAFE RECOVERY OF ABDUCTED OYO STATE PROSPECTIVE CORPS MEMBERS DEPLOYED FOR THE NYSC ORIENTATION PROGRAMME
The leadership of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), Joint Campus Council, Oyo State Axis, expresses its profound concern, outrage and deep sense of responsibility over the reported abduction of prospective corps members (PCMs) from Oyo State who were mobilized for the NYSC orientation programme and transported towards orientation camps in Bende, Abia State, and Uyo, Akwa Ibom State.
We have received and are currently verifying reports concerning affected graduates from institutions in Oyo State, including; Federal College of Education (Special), Oyo in affiliation with University of Ibadan; Ajayi Crowther University, Oyo; Abiola Ajimobi Technical University, Ibadan; Federal College of Agriculture, Ibadan; and Ladoke Akintola University of Technology (LAUTECH), Ogbomoso, among others.
The situation is particularly disturbing because these are young Nigerian graduates who were proceeding to fulfil a national obligation under a programme organised and coordinated by the Federal Government.
Follow us for breaking news:
๐ JOIN WHATSAPP CHANNELWe are equally deeply concerned by reports surrounding the absence of timely and comprehensive public information concerning the affected prospective corps members and the apparent difficulty in obtaining a verified passenger manifest from the transportation service.
At a moment when families are desperately seeking information about their sons, daughters, brothers and sisters, silence is unacceptable.
OUR DEMANDS
In view of the gravity of this situation, NANS JCC Oyo State hereby demands the following:
1. IMMEDIATE AND COORDINATED RESCUE EFFORTS
The NYSC, Federal Government, Imo State Government and relevant security agencies must immediately coordinate all necessary efforts towards the safe recovery of every abducted prospective corps member.
2. OFFICIAL CONFIRMATION OF THE NUMBER OF AFFECTED PCMs
NYSC must provide an official briefing to the affected families and student community confirming the number of Oyo State prospective corps members affected, while withholding sensitive personal information where necessary for operational security.
3. IMMEDIATE ENGAGEMENT WITH FAMILIES
NYSC must establish a dedicated communication channel through which families of the affected prospective corps members receive verified and regular updates. Families must not be left to obtain information through rumors, social media or unofficial sources.
4. PUBLIC STATEMENT FROM NYSC
The NYSC must urgently address the nation and particularly the people of Oyo State concerning the incident, the measures being taken and the steps being implemented to prevent further danger to prospective corps members.
5. INVESTIGATION INTO THE TRANSPORTATION ARRANGEMENT
A comprehensive investigation must be conducted into the transportation arrangements, including:
The identity and status of the transportation operators;
The official passenger manifest;
The route taken;
Departure and arrival arrangements;
Security arrangements made for the journey;
Any deviation from approved transportation arrangements; and
Any other circumstances surrounding the incident.
6. IMMEDIATE SECURITY REVIEW OF NYSC MOVEMENT FROM OYO STATE
NYSC and the relevant security agencies must conduct an immediate security assessment of routes through which Oyo State prospective corps members are being transported to orientation camps. No prospective corps member should be knowingly exposed to avoidable danger in the course of fulfilling a national assignment.
7. SUSPENSION OR REVIEW OF HIGH-RISK MOVEMENT ARRANGEMENTS
Where security intelligence establishes that particular routes or transportation arrangements constitute a significant threat, NYSC must immediately review, suspend or redesign those arrangements until adequate security measures are put in place.
CONFRONTATION; THE LAST TOOL OF ALUTA
The National Association of Nigerian Students, Oyo State Axis, will not remain silent while Oyo State graduates who embarked on a Federal Government programme are left vulnerable and their families are left without adequate information. We have a responsibility to protect the interests and welfare of Nigerian students and graduates from Oyo State.
Accordingly, if these demands are ignored and there is no demonstrable emergency response, meaningful communication and concrete action towards the safe recovery of the affected prospective corps members, NANS JCC Oyo State and other Sister organisations shall be compelled to commence a peaceful and lawful MASS MOBILISATION of students and affected stakeholders. Such mobilisation may include peaceful picketing and closure of access to the NYSC Oyo State Secretariat and relevant transportation service outlets, as permitted by law, until the competent authorities provide satisfactory answers and demonstrate meaningful action.
This is not a threat against any individual or institution. It is a declaration that the lives and safety of Nigerian graduates cannot be treated with indifference.
We will not accept bureaucratic silence where human lives are at stake.
We therefore call on NYSC and all relevant authorities to treat this matter as an emergency of national importance and respond immediately.
We remain ready to cooperate with legitimate rescue and investigative efforts and will continue to prioritise the safe recovery of every affected prospective corps member above every other consideration.
The lives of our graduatesโ matter.
The safety of our students matters.
The families deserve answers.
And the Nigerian state must act.
Yours faithfully,
ABDULAZEEZ, Uthman Olawale
