Nigeria has secured an additional 10,000 slots for the 2027 Hajj, raising the countryโs total allocation from 50,000 to 60,000 and opening fresh opportunities for more intending pilgrims to undertake the pilgrimage.
The additional allocation by the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia is particularly significant for prospective pilgrims who could not secure places under the initial quota, with the new slots expected to ease pressure on the existing allocation.
The development also offers a fresh window for intending pilgrims who may have given up hope after the September 26 deadline earlier set by the National Hajj Commission of Nigeria (NAHCON) for submission of travel documents.
Although NAHCON has not formally announced a new deadline for travel document submission, the increase in the national allocation is expected to necessitate an adjustment to the timeline to accommodate the additional pilgrims.
NAHCON announced the additional allocation on Thursday, saying it followed sustained high-level diplomatic engagements between the Nigerian and Saudi Arabian governments.
Of the 10,000 additional slots, 7,500 will be allocated to State Muslim Pilgrims Welfare Boards, Agencies and Commissions, while 2,500 will be distributed among seven lead licensed Hajj tour operators.
