Singapore has introduced a government-backed matchmaking service for public-sector workers as the city-state grapples with a record-low fertility rate and an ageing population.
As reported by the BBC on Wednesday, known as FirstDate, the initiative was launched this week for government workers aged between 21 and 35. It uses the Nobel Prize-winning Gale-Shapley algorithm to match participants with one potential partner at a time.
FirstDate describes itself as offering “a different approach to dating,” with its website promising an end to “swipe fatigue.”
Participants sign in using Singapore’s national digital identity system and complete a questionnaire covering their interests, habits and values before being matched.
The Gale-Shapley Stable Marriage algorithm, which forms the basis of the service, was developed to create stable matches between two groups of people according to their preferences.
The late mathematician Lloyd Shapley was awarded the 2012 Nobel Memorial Prize in Economic Sciences for his work on the algorithm. It has since been used in areas including school admissions and medical residency placements, as well as dating services.

The launch has generated mixed reactions in Singapore, with some social media users describing the initiative as “dystopian”, while others have expressed interest in participating.
Elizabeth, a 29-year-old employee of Singapore’s Ministry of Defence, said she was willing to try the service and believed its government-backed nature could offer an additional layer of reassurance.
“At the end of the day, I think the experience of meeting someone through an application doesn’t change much across the \[different types of\] applications,” she told the BBC.
“But it is nice to know that the likelihood of being scammed is much lower. We’re all public servants looking for a partner, right?”
However, critics have questioned why the initiative is restricted to government workers and why participation is limited to people aged 21 to 35.
One Reddit user accused the government of focusing on fertility rather than helping people find partners, writing: “They are only doing this to raise the total fertility rate. They don’t actually \[care\] about whether we find a partner otherwise.”
The FirstDate pilot comes as Singapore faces significant demographic challenges.
Fewer than 30,000 babies were born in the country in 2025, the first time the annual figure had fallen below that mark in six decades. Meanwhile, deaths increased to about 26,500 in the same year.
In August, Prime Minister Lawrence Wong announced additional measures aimed at supporting families and encouraging couples to have children. The measures include almost S$70,000 in financial support for each child by the time they reach 17.
Singapore has previously introduced government-backed initiatives to encourage relationships and marriage.
In 1984, it established the Social Development Unit, which organised social activities for single university graduates. The programme was later criticised for being elitist because of its focus on graduates.
The government subsequently created another agency to promote marriage among non-graduates before the initiatives were eventually phased out.
Singapore is not the first government to experiment with technology-assisted matchmaking in response to demographic decline. In September 2024, Tokyo’s metropolitan government launched an AI-powered dating app for single residents.
Japanese government data released in July 2026 showed that the Tokyo initiative had been linked to 265 marriages.
It remains unclear whether Singapore’s FirstDate pilot will eventually be opened to the wider public.
