The Special Adviser to Governor Monday Okpebholo on Health Matters, Dr Andrew Iyamu, has alleged that a final-year medical student of the University of Benin (UNIBEN) contributed to the death of Alhaji Danjuma Garba, an aide to the governor.
Iyamu made the allegation on Wednesday in Benin City while speaking on the dangers of quackery in medical practice during the monthly briefing organised by the Edo State Ministry of Information and Strategy.
Garba, who served as Special Adviser on Arewa Matters to Governor Okpebholo, died on January 10, 2026, after a brief illness.
According to Iyamu, the deceased was being treated at a private hospital in the Uselu area of Benin City by a final-year medical student, contrary to medical regulations.
He said the student, who was undergoing training at the University of Benin Teaching Hospital (UBTH), claimed to have served as the Garba family’s doctor for several years.
“A final-year medical student was treating this guy. Yes, he was managing him from UBTH. We caught him. I invited him to my office. He said he had been their family doctor.

Iyamu said efforts to transfer Garba to a better-equipped facility came too late, as his condition had already deteriorated severely.
He alleged that the patient’s heart had become too weak to pump blood and questioned the treatment he had received before the attempted transfer.
“Before I could transfer him from the hospital he was in at that Uselu area to this place, the damage had already been done. The heart was too weak to pump blood.
“The kind of drugs they pumped him with and all that. He wasn’t seeing a cardiologist. You can’t be jack of all trades.”
The health adviser also condemned the practice of medical practitioners treating patients outside their areas of specialisation, describing it as a form of quackery.
“In medicine, we have sub-specialties. If it’s not your area, you give it to somebody else. That’s why we have sub-specialties in medicine,” he said.
Iyamu added that some practitioners attempt to handle cases beyond their expertise because they do not want to lose patients or income.
“You don’t want the money to go outside. You want to grab everything. It is wrong. That’s quackery,” he said.
He said the Edo State Government, through health monitors appointed by Governor Okpebholo, was determined to curb such practices and improve compliance with medical regulations.
Asked about the fate of the medical student, Iyamu said the student was released after Garba’s family intervened and insisted that he had been their doctor for several years.
“They let him go. We handed him over to the family. They said, no, he’s a doctor. For more than five years, six years, this boy has been with them. A medical student. It’s wrong,” he said.
Iyamu advised residents to seek treatment at properly equipped medical facilities where they can access qualified medical professionals, particularly when dealing with serious medical conditions.
