A prison officer in South Carolina has been dismissed, arrested and booked into the detention facility where she worked after she was accused of smuggling home-cooked meals to inmates.
Matrese Grant, a former sergeant and shift supervisor at the W. Glenn Campbell Detention Center in Darlington County, allegedly concealed the food beneath a blanket to avoid security cameras at the facility.
Grant, who had worked at the jail for about four months, was arrested on September 17 and charged with misconduct in office and furnishing contraband to inmates.
The allegations have not been tested in court.
According to the Darlington County Sheriff’s Office, the alleged activity came to light after another officer noticed unauthorised items entering the facility earlier this month.
Officials said Grant was found giving home-cooked meals to inmates on September 7. She allegedly hid the food beneath a blanket and placed it in a secure location where inmates could later retrieve it.

She was subsequently dismissed following an investigation into the alleged unauthorised deliveries.
Grant was booked into the same detention centre where she had supervised inmates, according to WRDW.
The sheriff’s office said Grant was later granted a $15,000 cash or surety bond covering both charges.
Authorities said food brought into the jail without permission was considered contraband because it could pose a security risk, including the possibility that weapons or other prohibited materials could be concealed inside food items.
The sheriff’s office has not accused Grant of placing any weapon or harmful object inside the meals. The charges announced against her concern the alleged unauthorised delivery of food.
The sheriff’s office said, “Sheriff Michael August stands firm on his zero tolerance policy for contraband entering this facility. There are strict rules in place for contraband, including food items, due to the possibility of weapons or other harmful materials being hidden within food items.”
Officials stressed that the rules applied to inmates and staff alike.
The statement added: “If any inmate, employee, or officer is discovered bringing contraband into this facility, they will be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.”
