Canada has listed 10 categories of workers eligible for targeted selection under its 2026 Express Entry system, opening a pathway for qualified candidates with skills and experience in areas identified as economic priorities.
The categories cover French-language proficiency, healthcare and social services, science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM), skilled trades, education and transport occupations, as well as physicians, senior managers and researchers with Canadian work experience, and skilled military recruits.
Under category-based selection, candidates must first qualify for one of the three Express Entry programmes the Federal Skilled Worker Program, Federal Skilled Trades Program or Canadian Experience Class before entering the Express Entry pool.
They are then ranked using the Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS), with candidates who meet the requirements of a particular category considered in category-based invitation rounds. Meeting a category requirement does not automatically result in an invitation, as eligible candidates are ranked by their CRS scores.
The first category is French-language proficiency, which is intended to support Canada’s objective of attracting French-speaking immigrants, particularly outside Quebec. Candidates must meet the prescribed French-language requirement as well as the other conditions for the relevant round.
The healthcare and social services category covers eligible professionals including doctors, dentists, pharmacists, nurses, psychologists, physiotherapists, social workers and other qualifying occupations. IRCC requires at least 12 months of qualifying work experience in an eligible occupation during the previous three years for this category.

👉 JOIN WHATSAPP CHANNELThe STEM category targets workers in selected scientific, technical and engineering occupations. Eligible occupations include civil, mechanical and electrical engineers, cybersecurity specialists and certain engineering technologists and technicians.
Canada’s trade occupations category covers skilled workers such as electricians, plumbers, carpenters, welders, machinists, construction managers, heavy-duty equipment mechanics and selected oil and gas drilling and services supervisors.
The education occupations category includes selected professionals such as secondary-school teachers, elementary and kindergarten teachers, early childhood educators and assistants, instructors of persons with disabilities and teacher assistants.
The transport occupations category targets workers including aircraft mechanics and inspectors, pilots, flight engineers, flying instructors, avionics technicians and automotive service technicians, among other eligible occupations.
Canada has also introduced targeted categories for physicians, senior managers and researchers with Canadian work experience. For these categories, applicants must have qualifying Canadian experience and satisfy the other Express Entry requirements.
The 10th category covers skilled military recruits, with the 2026 category aimed at eligible candidates recruited by the Canadian Armed Forces for qualifying roles.
Candidates who receive an invitation to apply for permanent residence have 60 days to submit their application. IRCC then assesses programme eligibility, the information in the Express Entry profile, category eligibility and the applicant’s admissibility to Canada.
IRCC said the categories are established to respond to identified economic needs, using labour-market information, projections and input from provinces, territories and other stakeholders. The department reviews and assesses the categories regularly.
