The presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Obi, has marked his 65th birthday with free surgeries for 65 children.
Obi disclosed this on Thursday morning via a post he shared on his official X account accompanied with a video showing him taking pictures with the children and their parents/guardians.
He announced the successful completion of 65 free adenotonsillectomy surgeries for children at the Mother Mary Hospital in Isolo, Lagos, as his 65th birthday initiative, with procedures addressing breathing difficulties, recurrent infections, and sleep problems led by Dr. Folaseye Adebayo.
Obi attended the final follow-up clinic where parents shared testimonies on their children’s improved health and quality of life, expressing gratitude to the medical team, hospital staff, and contributors while crediting divine guidance for the outcomes.
“Yesterday, I attended the final follow-up clinic and appreciation programme at Mother Mary Hospital, Isolo, Lagos, following the successful completion of 65 free surgeries for children to mark my 65th birthday,” he wrote.
“I am deeply grateful to God Almighty for guiding the medical team throughout the process and for granting all 65 children safe and successful surgeries.
“The surgeries, led by Dr Folaseye Adebayo and her dedicated team, included adenotonsillectomy. This procedure removes enlarged or chronically infected tonsils and adenoids, which can cause breathing difficulties, recurrent infections, and sleep-related problems in children.”
Going emotional, Obi said what made the occasion particularly touching was listening to parents share their testimonies and hearing how these procedures have improved their children’s health and quality of life.
He extended his profound appreciation to Dr Adebayo and her entire team, the hospital management, the parents, and everyone who contributed to making this initiative possible.
According to Obi, birthdays are not merely occasions for celebration but are opportunities to give back, touch lives, and make a meaningful difference in the lives of others.
He framed the event as an opportunity to give back rather than celebrate personally, reinforcing his public image of service-oriented leadership with the sign-off “A New Nigeria is POssible.”
“I thank God for the privilege of being part of this initiative and, most importantly, for the gift of 65 healthy and hopeful children,” said the former Governor of Anambra State.
“May God continue to bless all those who dedicate their lives to saving and improving the lives of others. A New Nigeria is POssible.”
