A 47-year-old man, Johnson Gabriel, has asked a Kaduna Customary Court to dissolve his 20-year marriage, alleging that his wife, Janet, beats him whenever they argue and has threatened his life.
Gabriel, a resident of Sabon Tasha, Kaduna, told the court that repeated disagreements with his wife often ended in physical assaults, which he said had made the marriage unbearable.
He said several efforts to resolve the marital crisis had failed despite interventions by family members and their children.
According to Gabriel, the situation had become unbearable, leaving him with no option but to seek an end to the marriage.
He told the court that his wife had become disrespectful and no longer conducted herself as he expected within the marriage.
Gabriel said he had endured the alleged abuse for a long time but could no longer continue living under what he described as constant hostility and threats.
He therefore urged the court to grant his request for divorce.
However, Janet, who was present at the proceedings, denied the allegations and accused her husband of attempting to portray her negatively because he wanted to marry another woman.
She also alleged that her husband’s attitude towards her often changed whenever he had money, suggesting that financial disagreements had contributed to the breakdown of their relationship.
After hearing both parties, the judge, Dauda Bala, urged the couple to explore reconciliation, particularly in the interest of their children.
The court subsequently adjourned the matter until September 20, when it is expected to receive a settlement report or proceed with the hearing if efforts at reconciliation fail.
