Senator Rufai Hanga has resigned from the Nigeria Democratic Congress, dealing a blow to Rabiu Kwankwaso’s political camp ahead of the 2027 elections.
Hanga, a close ally of the former Kano State governor, represents Kano Central Senatorial District and serves as Deputy Minority Whip of the Senate.
The lawmaker announced his resignation in a letter dated August 3, 2026, and addressed to the NDC chairman of Dakata Ward.
He said the decision followed careful reflection and personal deliberation.
“I am writing to formally notify you of my resignation from the Nigeria Democratic Congress, NDC, effective from today, 3rd August 2026,” Hanga wrote.
“After careful reflection and personal deliberation, I have decided to withdraw my membership from the party to pursue other personal commitments and career paths.”
The senator thanked the ward executive and other party members for the opportunities and support he received during his membership.
He said he valued the relationships built and experiences shared during his political activities within the party.
Hanga also returned his membership card and requested the removal of his name from the party’s register at the ward level.
“I wish the party and its members all the best in their future endeavours,” he added.
The senator did not disclose his next political destination in the resignation letter.
