The Federal Government has warned Nigerians seeking jobs in the public service to avoid common mistakes that continue to deny many applicants employment opportunities.
In a public advisory issued through the Federal Character Commission (FCC), the government also urged job seekers to be careful during recruitment exercises and avoid fraudsters who promise government jobs in exchange for money.
The commission advised applicants to rely only on verified recruitment channels and ignore fake offers designed to deceive them.
Below are the seven mistakes the FCC said applicants should avoid:
1. Using fake recruitment websites and adverts
The FCC warned applicants against fake recruitment websites, misleading social media adverts and unsolicited messages asking them to submit personal information or make payments.
The commission urged Nigerians to confirm vacancies through official government channels before applying.
2. Paying anyone to secure a government job
The commission warned applicants not to pay anyone who claims to have the influence to secure employment in any federal ministry, department or agency.
It said: “Applicants should be cautious of anyone requesting payment or claiming they can guarantee employment, and they are encouraged to report suspicious recruitment activities through appropriate channels.”
According to the FCC, anyone demanding money or offering to manipulate the recruitment process is acting outside the law.
3. Ignoring recruitment guidelines
The commission said many applicants fail to carefully study recruitment requirements before submitting their applications.
It explained that job vacancies usually contain conditions relating to academic qualifications, age limits, work experience, professional certifications and supporting documents, adding that applicants must meet all the requirements before their applications can be considered.
4. Submitting incorrect personal information
The FCC advised candidates to ensure every detail provided during the application process is correct.
It warned that mistakes in contact details, educational records or other personal information could lead to disqualification during the verification stage.
5. Waiting until the deadline to apply
The commission encouraged applicants to complete and submit their applications well before the closing date.
It said delaying applications until the final stage increases the chances of technical problems, incomplete submissions and missed deadlines.
6. Failing to prepare for recruitment tests
The FCC reminded applicants that recruitment exercises do not end with submitting application forms.
It said candidates should prepare for aptitude tests, interviews and other assessments that may form part of the recruitment process.
7. Trusting offers that promise automatic employment
The commission urged Nigerians to treat any recruitment advert that promises automatic employment, demands upfront payment or pressures applicants to make quick decisions as a warning sign of fraud.
The FCC also clarified that it does not recruit workers into federal ministries, departments or agencies.
It explained that recruitment is handled independently by the relevant institutions, while the commission monitors compliance with the Federal Character Principle under Section 14(3) of the 1999 Constitution, as amended.
The commission added that verified vacancies from federal government institutions may be published through the recruitment section of its website, allowing applicants to confirm available openings before proceeding to the official application portals of the recruiting agencies.
