Nigeria’s Islamic scholar, Sheikh Ahmad Gumi has criticised Burkina Faso’s military leader, Captain Ibrahim Traoré, over his position on Sharia and governance.
In a post on his Facebook page on Saturday, Gumi described Traoré as too young and inexperienced.
He further said that the Burkina Faso’s leader is very naive to fully understand the complexities surrounding religion, society and global politics.
According to him, Traoré’s approach could create opportunities for extremist groups to exploit public sentiment and attract more supporters.
He warned that leadership decisions require a deeper understanding of social and geopolitical realities.
“Captain Ibrahim Traoré (born 14 March 1988), with his anti-Shariah stance, at the age of 38, with nothing but military training on his resume, is too naive to understand even the complicity of the society he is ruling under the gun, let alone the dynamics of contemporary geopolitics.
“He has given the extremists the weapon they need to conscript more foot soldiers against his secular regime,” Gumi said.
In a related development, GISTSMATE MEDIA reported that Gumi has questioned why no government official has visited Boko Haram terrorists and bandits to negotiate an end to their violence, the way past leaders engaged Niger Delta militants.
He made the comparison in a Facebook post on Saturday, recalling how former President Goodluck Jonathan and former Vice President Yemi Osinbajo both visited militants in the creeks to broker peace.
Gumi noted that both leaders had, at different times, gone into the creeks to meet militants and had returned with programmes designed to end the militancy in the region.
“The former President Jonathan visited delta militants in the creeks, so also the former vice president Osinbajo. They all came up with a program to tame the militants,” he wrote. READ MORE
