Maryam Yusuf, a 14-year-old student of Ar-Raheem International College, Ilorin, has emerged as one of Nigeria’s brightest young academic talents following her outstanding performance at the 2026 Spelling Bee World Cup in Shanghai, China.
As a key member of Team Nigeria, which clinched the Gold Award in the Middle School category, Maryam’s achievement has drawn widespread recognition, positioning her as a rising star and an inspiration to young students across the country.

GISTSMATE MEDIA had earlier reported that Team Nigeria won the gold award in the middle school group category at the 2026 Spelling Bee World Cup held in Shanghai, China.
The four-member team comprising Adeolu Oluwadamilola Oreofe, Abdurrahman Yusuf, Chinedu Okediachi, and Maryam Yusuf competed against participants from Asia, Africa, the United States, China, and Canada at the competition, held from July 14 to 19.
Other African countries represented at the global event included Ethiopia, Côte d’Ivoire, Malawi, South Africa, and Zimbabwe.
The Nigeria Spelling Bee announced the achievement on its official Facebook page on Sunday.
“Team Nigeria has won the Gold Award in the Middle School Group Category at the 2026 Spelling Bee World Cup in Shanghai, China,” the post reads.
Before the competition, organisers had described the participants as “brilliant, articulate and exceptional”.
