Bride, Two Others Killed As Troops Repel Boko Haram Attack

A three-week-old bride and two other residents have been killed after suspected Boko Haram insurgents launched coordinated attacks on two military locations in Maiduguri, the Borno State capital.

The attacks, which occurred in the early hours of Friday, targeted military positions at Kofa and Muna but were repelled by troops of Operation HADIN KAI.

Residents said the insurgents, who arrived on motorcycles, opened fire indiscriminately while attempting to breach the military formations.

Witnesses said the exchange of gunfire between the troops and the attackers forced many residents to flee their homes, during which three civilians were struck by stray bullets.

A resident of Kofa, Deborah Usman, said a newly married woman, who had been married for only three weeks, was hit in the head by a stray bullet and died instantly while trying to escape the violence.

He added that the victims were to be buried after funeral prayers on Friday.

The incident came less than 24 hours after insurgents attacked a military position in Logomani community, Ngala Local Government Area, where a soldier was reportedly killed.

Confirming the latest attacks, the Acting Military Information Officer of Operation HADIN KAI, Capt. Mohammed Goni, said troops successfully foiled multiple coordinated infiltration attempts by suspected ISWAP fighters across different parts of Borno.

He explained that the terrorists attempted to infiltrate Muna Garage, Shuwari Village and the Ajilari Cross axis between 12:20 a.m. and 2:30 a.m., but were detected early and engaged by troops from multiple directions.

Goni added that separate infiltration attempts at Miringa and Dutsen Kura in Buratai were also repelled. He disclosed that an Armoured Mine-Resistant Ambush Protected vehicle triggered an improvised explosive device during a pursuit operation in Miringa, but no soldier was injured.

According to him, the attackers were forced to retreat after encountering superior firepower, while troops have continued clearance and pursuit operations to prevent further threats to surrounding communities.
