Hundreds of venomous snakes, including cobras, have escaped from breeding farms in southern China after severe flooding triggered by Typhoon Maysak, leaving several residents injured by snakebites.
The incident occurred in Hengzhou, in China’s Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, where days of torrential rainfall inundated snake farms and nearby communities.
State media reported that floodwaters swept snakes from commercial breeding facilities, prompting emergency warnings for residents.
Videos circulating online showed locals using dip nets to capture the reptiles, while another clip captured a cobra emerging from muddy floodwaters.
A resident receiving treatment at a local hospital told Beijing News, “Hundreds of snakes escaped all at once. I’ve seen five or six.” The victim said he was bitten by a cobra while clearing debris from his home.
Doctors confirmed they had treated multiple snakebite victims since the flooding began. Local authorities also acknowledged reports that villagers had been bitten after the escaped snakes spread into nearby communities.
Officials warned that venomous species, including cobras, kraits and green pit vipers, could seek shelter inside homes, stairwells and along riverbanks.
Residents were advised not to handle snakes themselves and to immediately contact emergency responders.
The flooding has devastated parts of Guangxi, where at least six people have died, six remain missing and more than 50,000 residents have been evacuated after reservoirs overflowed and villages were submerged.
Across China, the death toll from recent extreme weather has risen to 38, including 21 people killed in a landslide in Gansu Province and 11 others who died during thunderstorms and tornadoes in Hubei.
Authorities have increased anti-venom supplies, opened fast-track treatment for snakebite victims at Hengzhou People’s Hospital and deployed rescue teams and medical specialists to affected communities.
