The police command in Plateau has warned its operatives against illegal search of civilians’ phones. The police commissioner, Bassey Ewah, gave the warning while addressing the operatives in Jos.
The command’s spokesman, Alfred Alabo, disclosed this in a statement on Thursday.
“No personnel of this command has the legal authority to search the mobile phone of any citizen on the road without a court warrant,” said Mr Ewah.
The statement said that the commissioner, who reiterated the command’s commitment to professionalism, warned the cops against unprofessional conduct.
He added that the commissioner advised residents to politely decline any unlawful attempt by personnel to search their phones and report such to the nearest Police station.
Mr Alabo also advised residents to report any incident of harassment through the following phone numbers: 08034448617, 08060545670, 08037681026, 09016146804, and 09051145757.
In another development, GISTSMATE MEDIA reported that one hundred and thirty-five suspected cultists were arrested on Tuesday by operatives of the Lagos State Police Command after failed initiation attempts in different parts of the state.
The botched initiation exercises were part of activities lined up to mark the annual 7/7 celebration by cult groups in the state.
The Commissioner of Police, Fatai Tijani, disclosed this while briefing journalists on Wednesday at the command headquarters in Ikeja.
The police chief said the operation was the outcome of intelligence-led policing, aggressive raids, convoy patrols and the strategic deployment of tactical teams across identified criminal hotspots in Lagos. READ MORE
