The Department of State Services (DSS) has reportedly detained a female journalist, Zainab Sodiq, who has actively covered the activities of human rights activist and presidential candidate of the African Action Congress (AAC), Omoyele Sowore.
According to reports, the secret police had earlier seized a drone used by Sodiq while covering Sowore at the domestic airport in Lagos.
Sahara Reporters alleged that she was subsequently contacted and told to travel to Abuja to retrieve the seized drone from a DSS officer identified only as Musa.
However, after arriving in Abuja to collect the equipment, Sodiq reportedly became unreachable, with her last known location traced to the Yakubu Gowon Crescent area of Abuja.
Concerned associates repeatedly contacted the DSS officer who had reportedly instructed her to come for the drone.
The officer initially assured callers that Sodiq would “soon be done” and released, but subsequently stopped answering calls and reportedly blocked some of the telephone numbers used to reach him.
As of the time of filing this report, Sodiq had not returned and the DSS had not publicly explained the circumstances surrounding her reported detention or disclosed whether she was being accused of any offence.
The incident comes amid growing allegations of harassment and intimidation of journalists, activists, comrades and associates connected with Sowore.
The DSS is currently prosecuting Sowore over social media posts in which he described President Bola Tinubu as “a criminal”.
