WhatsApp has introduced usernames, a new feature designed to let users connect without sharing their phone numbers.
The feature, which is being rolled out gradually, allows users to reserve a unique username that can later be used when messaging people for the first time, offering an extra layer of privacy.

Here are six easy steps to create your WhatsApp username:
1. Update WhatsApp: Ensure you are using the latest version of the app to access the username feature.
2. Open Settings: Launch WhatsApp and tap Settings.
3. Go to Account: Select Account, then tap Username.
4. Choose a username: Enter a unique username or use WhatsApp’s built-in username generator to help create one.
5. Reserve your username: Confirm your selection to reserve it for future use. Businesses, creators and organisations can also choose to claim their existing Instagram or Facebook usernames where eligible.
6. Enable username messaging: Once the feature becomes available in your country, you can use your username instead of your phone number when contacting someone for the first time. You can also enable an optional username key to control who can message you.
WhatsApp said usernames are part of its efforts to improve user privacy. Unlike other platforms, there will be no public directory or username suggestions, meaning people will need to know your exact username before they can start a conversation with you.
The company added that the feature will be rolled out gradually over the coming months and users will receive a notification within the app when usernames become available in their country.
