Governor of Lagos State, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has intensified emergency waste evacuation operations across Lagos and personally joined cleanup efforts to tackle mounting refuse heaps across the state.
During the Saturday’s Lagos monthly sanitation exercise, the Governor joined residents of surulere local government, Ojuelegba to pack refuse and advocate for a clean environment.
Mr Sanwo-Olu participated alongside Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, Managing Director of the Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA), Dr. Muyiwa Gbadegesin, and other members of the State Executive Council.
The Lagos State Government reintroduced the monthly environmental sanitation exercise, effective Saturday, 25th April 2026.
The re-introduction of the exercise was officially flagged-off by Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu at the Mushin–Agege Motor Road corridor.
Sanwo-Olu, accompanied by his deputy, Obafemi Hamzat, said the exercise, which had been dormant for years following a court ruling that nullified compulsory restriction of movement during sanitation hours, would now take place on the last Saturday of every month between 6:30 a.m. and 8:30 a.m.

The First Lady gave the advice after hosting the wives of the 36 state governors in Abuja, where she highlighted the interventions and empowerment programmes being implemented through her office to support vulnerable Nigerians.
According to her, many small businesses require little start-up capital and can provide sustainable sources of income when supported through grants.
“We’re trying to give hope and to start akara business doesn’t take a lot of money. To start roasting corn… somebody even said about grants, you see they’re saying that kulikuli doesn’t take much. We didn’t give them a loan, we gave it to them as a grant,” she said. READ MORE
