Nigeria Is Oil Producing Country That Has Never Had Electricity – Kemi Badenoch Mocks Country

United Kingdom Conservative Party leader Kemi Badenoch has drawn sharp criticism after publicly lambasting Nigeria’s governance record, singling out the country’s chronic electricity shortage as a direct product of what she described as deeply flawed public policy decisions.

Speaking on how her formative years in Nigeria shaped her political outlook, Badenoch expressed frustration that the country’s considerable oil wealth had failed to translate into meaningful improvement in the lives of ordinary Nigerians.

“Nigeria is an oil-producing country that has never had electricity,” she stated, adding that abundant natural resources count for little when government policy is incapable of harnessing them effectively.

The Conservative leader went further, drawing a pointed comparison between the economic policies of Nigeria’s military administrations in the 1980s and 1990s and those currently being pursued in Britain by Energy Secretary Ed Miliband — a parallel she clearly did not intend as a compliment.

In her assessment, government overreach and redistributive economic policies are a reliable path to national ruin.

“The government’s going to take control. We know what’s best. We’re going to redistribute. These are stupid ideas that eventually just bankrupt the country,” she argued.

Badenoch, who spent part of her childhood in Nigeria before relocating to the United Kingdom, said those early experiences in a developing nation remain a powerful reference point in her approach to governance.

“You grow up in a third-world country and you look at why it is termed ‘third world,’ and I don’t want that to happen here,” she said, framing her conservative economic convictions as lessons drawn from lived experience rather than ideology alone.

Her remarks have since attracted reactions from political observers and Nigerians, with many questioning the appropriateness of the characterisation coming from a prominent Western political figure of Nigerian descent.
