Former Minister of Youth and Sports Development Solomon Dalung says no presidential candidate can win a Nigerian election without securing votes from the North, as the African Democratic Congress began its primary elections in Nasarawa State.
Dalung, chairman of the ADC State Election Committee for Nasarawa, spoke in Lafia while overseeing the conduct of primaries for the House of Assembly, House of Representatives, and Senate seats.
“You cannot win election in Nigeria without the North. You cannot. And the North is predominantly ADC,” Dalung said.
He argued that Nigeria has returned to regional politics, similar to the First Republic. “We have gone back to regional politics now in Nigeria. What happened in the first republic is what is happening now. So, every region has its party. The Igbos have taken APGA. APC, Nigerians have abandoned it to Tinubu and his people. The PDP, Jonathan has taken it to South,” he said.
Dalung described the ADC as the only national party with reach across the country with dominance in the North, and influence in the South West, and other parts of the country.
On the state of the primaries in Nasarawa, Dalung said there had been no consensus in any position yet.
Addressing ongoing litigations involving the party, Dalung said legal challenges were a sign of the ADC’s growing relevance.
