GBAM! POS Operator Arrested Over Alleged Swapping Of Woman’s ATM Card In Abuja

A Point of Sale (POS) operator, identified as Ibrahim Bala, has been arrested for allegedly swapping a woman’s ATM card in Zuba, Gwagwalada Area Council of the FCT.

A witness, Samson Ishaku, said the incident occurred yesterday at about 10.12am when the woman visited a POS stand in the area to make a withdrawal.

According to him, the operator collected the woman’s ATM card, inserted it into the POS machine and returned it to her to input her PIN.

He alleged that after the woman entered her secret PIN and handed the machine back to the operator, the suspect quietly swapped the ATM card while processing the transaction.

Ishaku said the POS operator then told the woman there was a network problem and asked her to wait for the connection to improve.

“Unknown to the woman, the operator had already swapped her ATM card. She later became impatient, collected the card and went to another POS operator nearby,” he said.

He explained that when the second operator inserted the card into the machine, it failed to respond, prompting suspicion over whether the card truly belonged to the woman.

“It was during efforts to make the card work that one of the customers discovered the ATM card had been swapped. The woman immediately raised an alarm,” he added.

According to the witness, some residents followed the woman back to the first POS operator and demanded an explanation about her missing ATM card.

He said the suspect initially denied the allegation before some people around the area confronted him, after which he allegedly confessed and the woman’s ATM card was recovered.

Ishaku said police officers were subsequently alerted and later arrived at the scene to arrest the suspect.

A police source at the Zuba Division, who spoke on condition of anonymity, confirmed the arrest of the suspect over the alleged ATM card swap.

The source said the suspect would be charged to court upon conclusion of investigations.

He added that a similar incident was recorded last week at the cattle market in Anagada village, where another suspect allegedly swapped a customer’s ATM card before he was arrested by the police.
