The Heads of Tertiary Institutions in Nigeria have unanimously agreed on new minimum admissible scores for candidates seeking admission into higher institutions across the country.
The decision was reached during the annual admission policy meeting organised by the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) in Abuja on Monday, May 11, 2026.
“The Heads of Tertiary Institutions in Nigeria had unanimously agreed that the Minimum Admissible Scores for admissions into Universities should be 150, Colleges of Nursing, 150, and Polytechnics, 100,” JAMB stated after the meeting.

However, institutions are free to set higher cut-off marks for applicants seeking admission.
Last year, universities adopted 150 as the minimum benchmark, while polytechnics and colleges of education retained 100.
In a related development, candidates seeking admission into Nigeria Certificate in Education (NCE) programmes in colleges of education will no longer be required to sit for the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME).
The development comes amid broader reforms in Nigeria’s tertiary education admission process.
The Minister of Education, Tunji Alausa, announced this on Monday during JAMB’s 2026 policy meeting in Abuja.
Under the new guidelines, prospective students will only need a minimum of four O-level credits in their school certificate to qualify for admission.
According to the minister, the move is designed to ease the administrative burden on the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB).
The annual policy meeting organised by JAMB is used to determine admission guidelines, cut-off marks and procedures for universities, polytechnics and colleges of education across the country.
