VIDEO: Heated Exchange Between Oshiomhole, Akpabio Disrupts Senate Plenary

There was drama in the Senate on Wednesday as Senate President, Godswill Akpabio, and the senator representing Edo North, Adams Oshiomhole, clashed over the interpretation of the amended Standing Rules.

The disagreement disrupted the plenary for about 10 minutes.

Trouble started when Akpabio began reading the Votes and Proceedings of Tuesday.

Oshiomhole raised a point of order, but the Senate President ruled him out, citing the Senate Standing Orders 2023 (as amended), which do not permit points of order at that stage.

Oshiomhole insisted on speaking, prompting Akpabio to call on the lawmaker representing Abia North, Orji Uzor Kalu, to clarify the rules.

Kalu’s intervention did not resolve the matter as the Edo lawmaker continued.

The Chief Whip, Tahir Monguno, warned Oshiomhole to desist or face sanctions.

Akpabio also referred to Order 20(F), insisting that lawmakers must be guided by the rules.

“We should not just go home, buy forms and come here without knowing the rules,” Akpabio said.

He warned Oshiomhole against further disruption.

“Oshiomhole, if you become unruly, we will use the rules to take you out of the Senate,” he added.

The session later resumed, with the lawmaker representing Kebbi Central, Adamu Aliero, moving a motion for the adoption of the Votes and Proceedings, which was seconded by the Senate Minority Leader, Abba Moro.

There were indications that Oshiomhole’s outburst may be linked to Tuesday’s amendment of the Senate rules.

The Senate had, after a closed-door session, amended Orders 4 and 5 of its Standing Rules, tightening eligibility for presiding and principal offices.

Under the new Order 4, nominations for presiding officers must strictly follow ranking, from former Senate Presidents to first-time senators.

Order 5 also provides that only senators who have served at least two consecutive terms are eligible to contest for principal offices.

The changes are widely seen as targeting incoming lawmakers, including governors and former senators who are expected to contest seats ahead of the 2027 general elections.

With many governors nearing the end of their tenure, the race for Senate seats has intensified, as political heavyweights position themselves for roles in the National Assembly.
