Aisha Yesufu Quits ADC For NDC, Joins Race For FCT Senate Seat

Prominent activist, Aisha Yesufu, has dumped the African Democratic Congress (ADC) for the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) and formally declared her intention to contest the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) senatorial seat.

Yesufu announced her defection on Wednesday through her verified X account, linking her decision to her continued political alignment with former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, whom she described as the embodiment of hope for a functional Nigeria.

She said, “The next couple of days will define the future of this nation. This deeper understanding is why I resigned from the African Democratic Congress (ADC) to join the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) as I follow the leadership of HE Peter Obi, who today embodies the hope and aspiration of a Nigeria that works.”

Explaining the rationale behind her latest political move, Yesufu said she was keeping faith with a personal commitment she made when she first aligned with Obi’s political movement.

“When I give my word, I keep it. My decision to support HE Peter Obi first led me to the ADC. To continue to honour the promise I am joining the NDC,” she stated.

The activist further disclosed that her switch to the NDC goes beyond ordinary membership, as she is now seeking elective office for the first time.

“This time I am joining the NDC not just as a member but as one running for the FCT Senatorial seat,” she declared.

Yesufu also said she had formally concluded all obligations with the ADC before exiting the party, describing her transition as smooth and orderly.

“I have tidied up all my obligations to the ADC, ensuring a clean transition. I was fortunate to work with great and amazing people whose goal was a better country,” she wrote.

Reflecting on her time in the ADC, she noted that she served in several strategic positions, including sub-committee chair, deputy committee chair and secretary.

“The experience has been invaluable, and I thank everyone for their support and cooperation,” she added.

Yesufu gained national prominence as a co-convener of the #BringBackOurGirls campaign and later emerged as one of the most visible supporters of Obi during the 2023 presidential election campaign.

She played a key role in mobilising young Nigerians under the “Obidient” movement, which significantly altered the country’s political landscape during the last general election.

Political observers believe her defection and declaration for the FCT Senate seat could further reshape opposition politics in Abuja ahead of the next electoral cycle as realignments continue among emerging political blocs.
