BREAKING: 17 Reps Dump ADC For NDC (Full List)

Seventeen members of the House of Representatives on Tuesday defected from the African Democratic Congress (ADC) to the Nigerian Democratic Congress (NDC), further intensifying the wave of political realignments ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The defections were formally announced on the floor of the House during plenary, marking one of the most significant shifts within the lower legislative chamber in recent times.

The lawmakers who joined the NDC include Yusuf Datti, Uchenna Okonkwo, Adamu Wakili, Thaddeus Attah, George Ozodinobi, Lilian Orogbu, Oluwaseyi Sowunmi, Peter Aniekwe, Mukhtar Zakari, George Oluwande, Munachim Umezuruike, Emeka Idu, Jesse Onuakalusi, Ifeanyi Uzokwe, Afam Ogene, and Abdulhakeem Ado.

In a related development, Leke Abejide also defected from the ADC, but to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

The latest defections come barely 48 hours after former presidential candidates Peter Obi and Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso officially dumped the ADC for the NDC, in what observers have described as a “seismic shift” in Nigeria’s political landscape.

Obi, who was the Labour Party’s presidential candidate in the 2023 elections, and Kwankwaso, who flew the flag of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), had stormed the NDC National Secretariat in Abuja on Sunday alongside a large number of supporters and political allies to formalise their entry into the party.

Their defection followed Obi’s earlier resignation from the ADC, citing internal challenges, while Kwankwaso confirmed that both leaders reached a mutual decision to abandon the embattled platform after extensive consultations.

Reacting to the growing influx of high-profile politicians into the party, the National Leader of the NDC, Senator Henry Seriake Dickson, urged Nigerians to ignore what he described as propaganda and distractions targeted at the party.

In a statement issued on Monday, Dickson described the development as a “powerful convergence” of political forces committed to reclaiming Nigeria.

“As an ambitious project, the NDC will naturally attract rumours, gossip and even blackmail. These are expected parts of the terrain,” he said.

He added that the party aims to build a strong ideological foundation comparable to enduring political institutions globally.

“Our goal in the NDC is to build an ideological political party, one that can be compared to the ANC in its finest years in South Africa, as well as established political parties across Europe, America, India and even the Communist Party of China — in terms of stability, structure, and the ability to endure beyond its founders for generations to come,” Dickson stated.

The former Bayelsa State governor also revealed that the party’s registration process dates back to 2017, countering narratives that the NDC is a sudden political creation.

He called on Nigerians, particularly youths and women, to join the movement, register with the party, and actively participate in the country’s democratic process.

“With the current wave of defections and alliances, political analysts say the build-up to the 2027 elections is already taking shape, with the NDC emerging as a potential third-force platform capable of reshaping Nigeria’s political dynamics.”
